Coffee Chat with Inspirational Women: Featuring Chelsey Davis

Drum roll please…

I am excited to announce my new series called “Coffee Chat.”

This series will be focused on inspirational women who love their jobs and want to inspire other women to find their passions and transform their lives. Today’s coffee chat features my dear friend, Chelsey Davis, who is an AZ native working for ABC 15. Keep reading to hear all about the in’s and out’s in Chelsey’s career in broadcast journalism.

1. Name, where you live and one fun random fact about you to break the ice with our readers.

My name is Chelsey Davis, and I live in my hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. I was prompted to give one, fun and random fact about myself to break the ice with you, but I find it difficult to just pick one… in the same way I can’t pick just ONE favorite movie or ONE favorite dessert. Maybe you can relate! Random facts, here we go:

A) I used to cheer for the Arizona Cardinals for five seasons, was captain for two and represented the team in the Pro Bowl in Hawaii in 2014.

B) I created the first NFL Pro Bowl Special in 2015 for participants with special needs to dance with professional cheerleaders from across the NFL and interact with their mascots with fun giveaways.

C) I had a pulmonary embolism my senior year of high school and nearly died from it. I was in love with life before then, but I’m even more so now. “Full out or get out” is one of my mottos.

2. Describe the average work day in your life?

I am part of the anchor team for the morning show for ABC 15! I am a Jill-of-all-Trades. I’m the Smart Shopper, meaning I find you the best deals and ways to save money! Our style of presenting our stories is similar to an Saturday Night Live skit or mini movie. We LOVE being creative! I am also filling in for traffic anchoring, while our normal anchor is on maternity leave, I feature upcoming weekend events, and I work on franchise series for on air, online and on social media. I LOVE what I do and the community I serve! That work day means I wake up at 2AM, go into work by 4AM, and am on air from 4:30 to 7AM, 7:25AM, 7:55AM, 8:25AM, 8:55AM and tape stories to run in the later shows at 6PM and 10PM. We go to bed around 6PM.

3. What inspired you to go down this career path?

I’m following in my father’s footsteps. All my life, he’s been and is currently a radio DJ. I have three older brothers, and when we were younger, he would bring us into the studio and let us join him. As kids, we all got into acting and performing, and I was always hosting the morning announcements from elementary school to doing media work in high school. One of my high school counselors told me I would be on TV one day. She was right. I loved the teachers I had, and they inspired me to teach, but even my college counselor told me that I should be in the broadcast industry. I went to Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and the rest is history.

4. What was your very first step to get you where you are today?

When it comes to the first steps I took to get me where I am today, I think it has to go back to cheering, dancing, performing and acting at a young age. Embracing that creativity made stepping outside of my comfort zone, my comfort zone. Now instead of performing in front of an audience in studio, I’m performing in front of thousands live to their television screens at home.

5. What is one challenge you had to overcome in order to reach happiness with your career?

I am a Christian working in television news. A massive challenge is one I continue to face. I understand how viewers might feel like the news is only about negativity. I find happiness in knowing that I can bring the sunshine to help others, create hope and empower everyone.

6. What are three habits you would recommend to someone pursing their dream career?

Three habits to achieve your dream career:

A) Train your mind to only have positive thoughts to build you up. Create words of affirmation, and speak them out loud while you look in the mirror.

B) Create a vision board to keep your goals in sight. Observe where there’s a need in your workplace, and go above the expectations to fill the void and create a new space to achieve your goals and theirs collectively.

C) Tell everyone your goals and have them hold you accountable. What you speak becomes reality.

7. How would you describe your support network? Who’s in it?

My support network is who I consider my core. I have the Lord in my heart, my husband, lifelong friends, my family members and fellow Arizona Cardinals Cheerleaders in my core.

8. What’s one skill you’re currently working, that will help you further your career?

I’m not currently working on “one skill” to further my career. I’m just always aiming to expand my skill sets and be the best version of myself and improve on all fronts.

9. To balance out your work life, what’s your fitness and health regime?

My husband works on 12 News in Arizona, and we are on the same schedule. We are almost to our one year anniversary, and we love spending as much time together as possible. When we get home from work around noon, we go to the gym together and then go hike in the desert mountains. We eat very clean. Thankfully, my amazing husband does all the cooking, and I do the baking. ;+)

10. What is one book that helped you on your career journey that you would recommend?

Although I could probably think of a book that really helped with my career journey, I feel like building the relationships, networking, and being present is the best way to excel in your career.
