Today’s coffee chat features Amy Webber, who currently works as a freelancer while builder her own production company. Talk about a big dream to inspire you! Keep reading to get to know the amazing Amy and some great tips for those feeling like taking a leap of faith in following their own dream.

1. Where do you live and what is one random fact about you to break the ice with our readers?

I currently live in Los Angeles, CA and a fun fact is I lived in Europe for 6 years after I finished my undergrad!

2. What is the first thing you like to do before you start your day?

I make my bed – it starts the day off on the right foot and sets the tone for a great day!

3. What inspired you to go choose your career path as a freelancer? Is there a childhood memory that made you decide?

I grew up surrounded by strong, Southern women who were never afraid to go after what they wanted and build the life they wanted to live. I watched my mother go against the odds time after time growing up and finding a way to build the life she always dreamed of.  I really want to build a life that I both, love and am proud of and her hard work and determination have inspired me everyday.  I have been very fortunate in my career that I have been able to experience work in both a freelance, as well as a  a more traditional office setting. I have found for me, working as a freelancer allows me the time and space I need to just be in the world so I can be inspired by what’s around me.  I have also found that I really need to make time to nurture and encourage all of the parts of my life in order to be the best I can be when I am working.

4. What was your very first step to get you where you are today as an entrepreneur?

I’ve been toying with the idea of starting my own production company for years and have spent countless hours researching the market and seeing how I can make my company standout in an overly saturated space. As I am still in the early stages of building my company I am working on finalizing my business plan and developing my website now.

5. What was your big challenge you had to overcome to help you move forward with growing your business with new clients/customers?

I can be very critical of my work and I’ve had to really learn how to focus being present and accepting my abilities and not being afraid to be my biggest cheerleader.

6. What are three habits you would recommend to someone pursuing their dream career as an entrepreneur?

  1. Be clear about your goal – You may not know how you are going to get there, what the process will look like (or entail) but without a clear idea of where you want to go it’s easy to get lost on so many fronts of what it takes to make your business and brand successful.

  2. Know what makes you unique in the space – There are so many great ideas and inspiring, driven and talent people out there but the way to finding your success as a freelancer is to know your niche. What makes you different, what can you offer that no one else is able to do, what is your voice in the space and how can you make that truly unique and authentic to you?

  3. Do it with kindness – You never know where your next client, future employee, great idea will come from and approaching everyone who crosses your day with kindness and from a place of gratitude will help you create great relationships and develop an ethical business that you can be proud of.

7. How would you describe your support network? Who is in it?

I’m incredibly lucky to be surrounded by strong, smart dynamic people in a variety of fields as well as a great family. The one thing everyone has in common, kindness.  It really is so important and has helped me realize that yes, work and success are important, but leading a grateful and loving life is what defines greatness.

8. What’s one skill you are currently working on to be an effective leader?

I am working on letting go. I want to build the most sound structure I can so my team can have the space and freedom to reach their creative potential.

9. To balance out your work life, what’s your fitness and health regime?

You can find me working out every morning at 6:30. I love Bar Method (that’s where I am most mornings) but I’m working on diversifying my workouts a bit more and get back into weight training.

10. What is one book that helped you on your career journey that you would recommend?

Knowing Your Value: Women, Money, and Getting What You’re Worth. I think this is a particularly important read for women entrepreneurs as our society still teaches us to shun asking what we are truly worth in business.
